Redevelopment
at
Sarasota Housing Authority
Sarasota's distressed public housing is finally being revitalized. Sarasota Housing Authority has partnered with Michael's Development Company to redevelop our four family sites in Newtown.
Janie's Garden Phase II is underway, as the former Janie Poe units along Martin Luther King Jr. Way have been demolished to make way for 68 new apartments and 10,500 sq. feet of retail at the Marketplace at Janie's Garden. Phase 1 of the redevelopment, Janie's Garden Phase I, began at Janie Poe in April 2008, is now fully occupied.
The SHA Newtown Redevelopment Plan will:
- Provide more than 800 new housing units;
- Provide over 500 units of affordable housing for Sarasota;
- Provide a true mix of incomes as one-third will be public housing, one-third will be Low-Income Housing Tax Credit units, and the remaining third will be market rate;
- Infuse over $112 million into the local economy for just the rental phases of the overall project;
- Provide for hundreds of construction jobs for a period of 8-10 years; and
- Give a tremendous boost to Newtown's overall redevelopment plan.
