Resident Councils

As a resident your best opportunity to get informed and involved is thorough participation in your resident council. The resident council is a HUD and SHA recognized group of elected resident officers who have open communication with the Housing Authority and their residents regarding issues that affect their community. SHA works hard to encourage and respond to resident input and participation in all matters, especially with regard to the current redevelopment.

There are currently two separate public housing resident councils recognized by SHA; one for the Orange Avenue, Courts, and Bertha Mitchell properties (OCB) and another for the Janie Poe property. The president of the Janie Poe Resident Council is Valerie Buchand. The president of the OCB Resident Council is Jackie Green. Resident Council elections are held in the first quarter of each year with assistance from the Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency department and the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections.

Once elected to this influential position, resident council presidents and the other resident council officers are asked to participate on a Resident Advisory Board (RAB) which meets regularly with Executive Director Bill Russell to discuss issues and policies.
